| | » Don't Blink | | | | "Blinky Palermo: Retrospective 1964-1977" Postwar abstract painter and gifted colorist Blinky Palermo (1943-1977) is often considered a spiritual successor to famed artists Henri Matisse and Mark Rothko. Palermo's works range from deceptively simple wall paintings and drawings to multi-part painted compositions on aluminum panels. On view are approximately 70 works, many never before exhibited in North America, that reveal his artistic influences and the independent course he charted throughout his career. "Like Yves Klein, Blinky Palermo received critical acclaim in Europe for his contribution to the development of 20th-century art," says Kerry Brougher, the Hirshhorn's deputy director and chief curator. "Yet despite the fact that Palermo lived in the United States for several years and engaged with the work of American abstract artists such as Brice Marden, Agnes Martin and Robert Ryman, he has not received due recognition here. The Hirshhorn is delighted to be a part of this national tour, which gives the American public a comprehensive picture of Palermo's achievement."
