| Travel Tip - February 2011 | |
 | | | | | Don't Stand Out From the Crowd ... We've all seen it happen .. a loud tourist with expensive jewellery and cameras hanging off them wandering through a busy market with no real idea what's going on around them. Chances are that nothing will happen to them and they'll just be derided by locals and other visitors. But if a thief is going to target someone, then this is exactly what they're looking for. Especially in countries that aren't as wealthy as yours, it's wise and considerate not to wear expensive watches and jewellery and to be discreet with cameras and to dress as much like a local as possible. On a recent cruise ship stop in Kota Kinabalu in Borneo, we were all warned about pickpockets at a local market. The only ones who got "done" were two ladies who were waaay overdressed, dripping in heavy gold with expensive handbags in tow. Thieves cut under their bags and took the lot - money, credit cards and mobile phones. | |
