Travel Tip - October 2009

Shopping Tip
Travel to any popular destination in any part of the world and you are guaranteed to see two things: tourists and souvenir shops. While it's fun to bring home one or two mementoes of your travels, some of things you can encounter on the road today include counterfeit products. A fake Fendi handbag is one thing, but some counterfeit goods, such as perfume, alcohol, cigarettes, toys and medicines, can be dangerous to use. In Turkey in 2005, for example, more than 20 people died after drinking counterfeit raki, a strong aniseed drink which is popular among the locals.

So what can you do to spot the real thing from a potentially deadly souvenir? Top of the list is to stick to shopping for goods such as fragrances, alcohol, cigarettes, toys and medicines at reputable stores, official pharmacies, or shops which have been endorsed by a legitimate tourism authority. Beyond that, some things to look out for include poor quality wrapping, spelling mistakes on labels, missing batch codes, unsealed bottles, and missing expiration dates. And remember the golden rule: if a deal is too good to be true, then it is probably a fake.
